Prior Learning Assessment Exams

Prior learning assessments are great ways to earn college credit for your college and life experience. Exam specific testing and registration information is below.

CLEP Exam

With 33 different CLEP tests available, the College Board’s College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) allows students to earn college credit by demonstrating mastery of college-level material in introductory subjects. Learn more about the CLEP exam and CMCC course equivalencies.

CLEP Specific Testing Information

  • Registration and payment, $85 per test, must be done on the CLEP website. This does not include the CMCC proctor fee. CLEP tests are administered in the Center for Testing & Assessment by appointment only. Only one test may be taken per session. Individuals must wait 180 days to retake a test. Make note of your CLEP voucher number, as you must provide this number when you call the testing center to schedule your exam.
  • Non-CMCC Students: Before registering, check with your institution to verify CLEP exams are accepted for credit.

  • Eligible military personnel: DANTES funds one attempt per CLEP exam.  See CLEP website for details.
  • If you are taking an exam with a required essay (excluding College Composition), there is a $10 essay fee.  The fee will only be charged if the examinee passes the multiple choice section of the exam.  The essay will count as another test session (approximately 90 minutes).

DSST Exam

DSST exams offer 37 test titles in the areas of Social Science, Business, Mathematics, Applied Technology, Humanities, and Physical Science.  All the computer-based exams may be taken at CMCC.  The public speaking test is not offered by CMCC at this time.  Learn more about the DSST exam and CMCC course equivalencies.

DSST Specific Testing Information

  • Registration and payment, $85 per test, must be done on the DSST website. This does not include the CMCC proctor fee. DSST tests are administered in the Center for Testing & Assessment by appointment only. Only one test may be taken per session. The scores will be sent directly to your selected college or university and are available to the test taker immediately after Internet-based exams are taken.
  • Non-CMCC Students: Before registering, check with your institution to verify DSST exams are accepted for credit.
  • Eligible military personnel: DANTES funds one attempt per DSST exam. See the DSST website for details.

Foreign Language Achievement Testing Services (FLATS) Exam

Through Brigham Young University’s Foreign Language Achievement Testing Services, individuals may be able to earn academic credit for foreign language knowledge in the following languages. Learn more about the FLATS exam and CMCC college credit.

FLATS Specific Testing Information

  • Registration and payment, $50 per test, must be done on the Brigham Young University website. This does not include the CMCC proctor fee. FLATS exams are administered in the Center for Testing & Assessment by appointment only.

  • Non-CMCC Students: Before registering, check with your institution to verify FLATS exams are accepted for credit. Once approved, complete the “Additional Results To” section with your college/university information. Do not send your results to Central Maine Community College.
  • CMCC students: You will receive official results within 3 weeks of completing the test. Official results will be mailed to CMCC only if you indicate CMCC on the registration form. A copy will be sent to your address indicated on the form, and a copy will be placed on file at BYU. If the student checks the “hold” box on the registration form, the scores will not be sent to CMCC. Please ensure your “Additional Results To” section is filled out properly so the Office of the Registrar receives your results.

Challenge Exams

Central Maine Community College matriculated (current degree, certificate, or advanced certificate seeking) students have the opportunity to take a challenge exam in lieu of any CMCC course for which an exam is written and available. Challenge exams are limited to one per course and may not include courses for which CLEP and DSST exams are available. Exams that do not require laboratory space will be completed in the Center for Testing and Assessment. These exams are not open to the public and/or for course challenge at another institution.

Challenge Examination Specific Testing Information

  • Register by filling out the Request for Prior Learning Assessment Application.
  • Registration and payment, $100 per test, must be done through the Office of the Registrar and the Business Office, both located in Jalbert Hall. Additional fees may apply if laboratory supplies and materials are required for the exam.
  • Requests must be approved by the department chair, academic dean, and relevant faculty member.
  • A grade of C or higher might be attained, but will be recorded as a “P” on the students transcript and not factored into GPA.
  • Exams must be completed in time to impact the students upcoming schedule. If the student is enrolled in the course for which they are taking the challenge exam, a refund of prepaid tuition will be authorized if the challenge exam is successful within the add/drop period.
