Lending a Hand at Sturdivant Tuna Tournament

August 4, 2016

The Captain’s Meeting and fundraising auctions kicked off the 19th Annual Sturdivant Island Tuna Tournament (SITT) earlier this month. Held out of the Spring Point Marina in South Portland, this first-class giant Bluefin tuna fishing tournament brings together highly-skilled anglers from all over the Northeast. The event is a major fundraiser, as the SITT Charitable Foundation has made more than $600,000 in contributions since the inaugural event in 1998. Most of the funds have gone toward establishing and growing scholarship endowments at Maine’s community colleges, including Central Maine Community College. Helping out from CMCC at the auctions were left to right Shelby Neuschwanger, CMCC alum and 2014 recipient of a SITT scholarship; Roger Philippon, dean of planning and public affairs; Seve Deery-DeRaps, 2016 scholarship winner; and Chuck Gregory, academic dean at Southern Maine Community College and SITT secretary.
