CMCC Athletes of the Year

The Athletes of the Year at Central Maine Community College (CMCC) have been announced by President Scott E. Knapp and Athletic Director Dave Gonyea.

Samantha Belardo headshot

Samantha Belardo

The female Student Athlete of the Year is Samantha Belardo, a Criminal Justice student and soccer player who hails from Russell, MA. Her coach Rob Rodriguez said: “Sam’s accomplishments continued to pile up. She is the all-time leading scorer for the women’s soccer program with 19 goals over two seasons, and five of those 19 goals were game winners. She routinely drew our opponents’ top defenders to mark her which freed up our other forwards and mids to score. Sam is an unselfish player . . . at her best when the game is on the line.” Named to back-to-back YSCC All Conference selections, and a USCAA All-American second team, Sam was team MVP in 2018. An honors student, Sam graduated in May.

Corey David Headshot

Corey David

Corey David from Ocala, FL is the male Student Athlete of the Year. Captain of the men’s basketball team and a team leader on and off the court, Corey graduated in May with high honors in Business Administration & Management. On the court, he has been “the gas that makes the Mustangs go,” a floor leader who sees the whole court. Despite tearing his ACL in December, he played 15 games for the squad averaging 8.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game. He was honored by the YSCC as a second-team, all-conference player. According to Coach Gonyea, “Corey has been the heart of our team. He is a student of the game and works hard to make himself and his teammates better. He is one of the best to play the point-guard position at CMCC.”

Free Online Summer Courses for the H.S. Class of 2020

Class of 2020 Graduation cap graphic

Central Maine Community College in Auburn has announced that any Maine student who is graduating with the high school class of 2020 is eligible to take advantage of free online college classes this summer at CMCC. The other six Maine community colleges are also offering free summer courses as a “Gift to High School Class of 2020.”

“The Class of 2020 has lost a lot this spring, from missing out on proms and traditional graduation ceremonies to a disruption of their college and work plans,” said David Daigler, president of the Maine Community College System, in announcing the MCCS Gift to the Class of 2020. “Summer jobs are likely to be in short supply which makes it hard to earn money to help with college expenses and gain valuable work experience. We hope this can save the Class of 2020 significant time and money in reaching their college and career goals. We can’t replace what they have lost, but we can offer to help them keep moving forward.”

At CMCC, a special eight-week term starting Monday, June 1, and six-week term starting in July, will be offered. Students can explore their interests, earn college credit, and save money and time as they move toward their college and career goals.

To get started, students can check the course listing and registration information at https://bit.ly/2LDmm8Z. Those who have questions, can email one of the college navigators Andrew Morong at amorong@cmcc.edu or Connor Sheehy at csheeny@cmcc.edu For more information, visit cmcc.edu.

Nursing Students Take Test in Parking Lot Computer Lab!

Thirty-two second-year nursing students at Central Maine Community College (CMCC) took an ATI exit exam recently in the “parking lot computer lab” at the College. This enabled them to take the test with proper social distancing and the required faculty proctoring. The students completed the exam while sitting in their own vehicles, connected to the college’s Wi-Fi. This exit exam, which is factored into the students’ final grade, is also a predictive test designed to mimic the NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) the students will be taking in the near future.

While the CMCC campus has been closed due to COVID-19, any students who lacks such access at home are able to get free Wi-Fi in the parking lot lab. They can also borrow a laptop by calling the IT department. An IT technician then brings a laptop to them, all the while observing proper safety protocols.

CMCC nursing students Elsie Marston, left, and Autum Koch, right, are pictured here right after they completed the ATI exit exam in the “parking lot compute lab” at the college.
