CMCC welding student Darrick Bryant of Farmington cuts the ribbon while Dr. Betsy Libby, president, looks on during the opening celebration for the new welding lab.
The Center for Workforce and Professional Development at Central Maine Community College unveiled the new welding lab at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, October 26. The ribbon cutting was attended by officials from CMCC and the Maine Community College System, plus board members from the CM Education Foundation and workforce partners in the industry.
The welding lab was made possible by a $950,000 grant from the Harold Alfond Center for the Advancement of Maine’s Workforce and the Maine Jobs and Recovery Plan. Construction on the lab, which is located within the Gene Haas Precision Machining Technology Center at the College, began in the spring of 2022. The state-of-the-art facility features twenty stations capable of both MIG and TIG welding.
The new welding lab is home to the Center for Workforce and Professional Development’s Welding Academy. The Academy is a 4-week, 160-hour training program that covers a variety of welding techniques, including MIG and TIG welding, industry-standard weld joints, print reading, basic metallurgy, sheet metal forming, tube welding, and grinding and polishing. The training is free to those who are unemployed, underemployed or whose job was negatively impacted by COVID-19.
“As a community college, it is our mission to identify workforce needs in the region and provide programming that directly answers those needs,” said Dr. Betsy Libby, president of Central Maine Community College. “We are grateful for the grant funding that enabled us to build out a lab space and purchase equipment to help learners develop new skills which lead to successful careers in high-demand fields.”
The first cohort of the Welding Academy began on Monday, October 17, 2022. The program is instructed by Forrest Stone, who has a diverse background in stainless steel fabrication in a variety of industries, including aerospace, breweries and electric vehicles. New cohorts will begin every five weeks. To register, contact the Center for Workforce and Professional Development at 207-755-5280 or workforcedevelopment@cmcc.edu.
“Skilled welders and metal fabricators are in high demand,” said Dr. Dwayne Conway, dean of workforce and professional development. “Graduates of the Welding Academy will be able to pursue careers in the aerospace, agricultural, automotive, construction and renewable energy sectors, which all play important roles in the Maine economic landscape.”

Enrollment reached a record high for the fall 2022 semester with 3,375 students enrolled in credit-bearing courses. Total fall enrollment across the Maine Community College System is up 12 percent partially boosted by the Free College Scholarship that provides free tuition and fees for students in the graduating classes of 2020 through 2023. First-time enrollment at the College is up 19.7 percent over the previous year. The enrollment increase is in sharp contrast to a nationwide trend of declining enrollments at two-year public colleges over the last several years.
“It is a very exciting time on campus and you can feel the energy in the halls,” said Dr. Betsy Libby, president. “Through our certificate and associate degree programs, as well as with the short-term training programs in the division of Workforce and Professional Development, we are preparing more students than ever to meet Maine’s workforce needs.”
Under the Free College Scholarship program high school graduates from the Classes of 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023, including those who earned their GED or HiSet, who enroll full time qualify for a scholarship that pays 100% of tuition and mandatory fees after grant aid has been applied. The Free College Scholarship engaged students who otherwise may not have considered college. The increased enrollment is good news for Maine’s workforce, as many of the programs offered at CMCC train students for high-demand fields.
Knowing the Free College Scholarship would be a big draw for recent graduates, Central Maine Community College launched a multi-media marketing campaign immediately after the program was announced. As students and their families learned about the Free College Scholarship, the CMCC admissions team found themselves busier than ever as the number of campus tours increased 200%. Admissions representatives have also been traveling throughout New England for college fairs, high school visits, and adult education centers.
The recruiting efforts have gone beyond recent high school graduates and have extended to adult learners. Over 45 percent of students enrolled for the Fall 2022 semester do not qualify for the Free College scholarship, which demonstrates that CMCC engages students of all ages who are looking to advance their education and position in the workforce.
“Recruiting, supporting, and guiding our new and returning students has been a campus-wide effort,” said Andrew Morong, associate dean of enrollment management. In addition to the students who are enrolled in degree programs, there are nearly 1,100 high school students enrolled through the Early College program. Some of these students will enroll at CMCC after high school graduation, but some will transfer the credit they earned to other colleges and universities saving time and money toward degree completion.

Central Maine Community College is pleased to announce that Robert Martin and Andrew Severson have both been named 2022 Leon A. Gorman Scholarship recipients for the 2022-2023 academic year. The Leon A. Gorman Scholarship was established by Gorman’s children and wife in honor of his 80th birthday. Gorman, who served as the president and CEO of LL Bean from 1967 to 2001, was a strong supporter of education at Maine’s community colleges.
The Leon A. Gorman Scholarship is awarded annually to students who demonstrate strong academic achievement, financial need, and a commitment to community service, which is a hallmark of the scholarship’s namesake. The scholarship covers the full tuition for the upcoming academic year.
Robert Martin

Robert Martin 2022
Leon A. Gorman Scholarship Recipient
Robert Martin hails from Prentiss, a small Maine hamlet situated between Danforth and Lincoln. Robert attended Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln and Northern Penobscot Tech Region III. His technical education consisted of taking classes in the Law Enforcement Program, a college-level career program. His law enforcement courses at Northern Penobscot counted for both his high school degree and transferred and counted towards his Criminal Justice degree at CMCC. In his first year as a Criminal Justice Student at CMCC, Robert worked hard and attained a 3.4 GPA.
Robert learned about CMCC’s Criminal Justice Program when an admissions advisor visited his school and spoke to his class. He also learned about CMCC’s Esports teams, which sealed the deal. When Robert isn’t in class, he typically can be found unwinding with friends and playing video games. In the fall, Robert competed on the Super Smash Brothers Esports team.
With aspirations to one day serve as a State Trooper, Robert is motivated to prepare for a career to serve the community. Whether by stopping crime, protecting people, or serving the vulnerable, Robert is focused on helping others. With his 3.4 GPA in the CMCC Criminal Justice Program, Robert is well on his way to fulfilling his career aspirations of serving others through service in the criminal justice system.
Andrew Severson

Andrew Severson
2022 Leon A. Gorman Scholarship Recipient
Andrew graduated from Oceanside High School in Rockland, Maine in 2020 and began his CMCC career as an online student in the Computer Technology program. Like so many students, Andrew’s college career started online not out of choice but out of necessity due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
When the fall 2021 semester rolled around, Andrew wanted a more authentic college experience and moved on campus at the start of the academic year. His transition to being a full-time residential student was not easy, but Andrew quickly built a strong support network on campus.
Having been involved with Jobs for Maine Graduates (JMG) since his freshman year at Oceanside High School, Andrew connected with Michelle Bourne, CMCC’s JMG College Success Specialist. Andrew worked with Michelle and using all of the resources available to him at CM, Andrew has been able to focus on his academic and personal growth.
Learning that computers are more of a hobby for him and not a career, Andrew changed his major to Business Administration and Management. Andrew gravitated to business after having some early success with investments and wants to develop his skills as an entrepreneurial leader with an ambition to achieve a high level of success.
On campus, Andrew has already taken on leadership roles as a resident assistant and volunteers for JMG’s Yellow Tulip Project to raise awareness in the CM community for mental health support and suicide prevention.
With an entrepreneurial vision, Andrew desires to start and run businesses in Maine.

Auburn, ME – Julia Noel of Sabattus has been named the 2022 Student of the Year at Central Maine Community College (CMCC) for her dedication in the classroom, commitment to improving the student residential experience, and contributions as a student-athlete.
Julia is studying Early Childhood Education at CMCC and is preparing for a career in pre-kindergarten education. In addition to her studies, Julia is also a member of the women’s soccer team and softball team. After the fall 2021 soccer season, Julia became a valuable member of the Resident Assistant staff at CMCC. Julia also volunteers with Andro United, an indoor youth soccer program in the Lewiston-Auburn area, outside of her campus activities.
Julia and six other Maine community college students will be honored on April 27, 2022 for their academic success and campus and community involvement at a virtual awards ceremony hosted by the Maine Community College System (MCCS) Board of Trustees. Each student will receive a $1,000 John and Jana Lapoint Leadership Award to recognize their achievements.
