Victoria Wile
2025 Student of the Year
Auburn, ME – Central Maine Community College (CMCC) is proud to announce that Victoria Wile, a second-year student in the Building Construction Technology (BCT) program, has been named the College’s 2025 Student of the Year.
Each year, CMCC selects one student for the Student of the Year Award. The recipient is someone who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to the College through strong academics, campus involvement, and community service. For the 2024–2025 academic year, Victoria Wile has been selected for this prestigious honor.
Victoria has shown unwavering dedication to both her studies and the broader community. She will graduate in May with a degree in Building Construction Technology, driven by a genuine passion for building, hands-on work, and improving the spaces around her. Her motivation and energy have set a high standard for both her peers and the faculty at CMCC.
As a member of CMCC’s Maintenance Team, Victoria has played a key role in nearly every construction and building maintenance project since her arrival. What distinguishes her is not only the high quality of her work but also the enthusiasm and joyful spirit she brings to every task. She approaches each project with commitment and a desire to do her very best.
In a field traditionally dominated by men, Victoria is blazing a trail for women in construction. She is a natural leader, inspiring others with her drive and dedication. Her leadership extends beyond campus into the broader community. A lifelong member of the Girl Scouts, she has always been passionate about service and community engagement. When the Boy Scouts of America opened its doors to women in 2019, Victoria co-founded one of the first all-women troops in the nation—Troop #2019 in Lewiston. She earned the rank of Eagle Scout and now serves with the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s National Honor Society.
On campus, Victoria is also an active member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, the Gaming Club, and the National Society of Leadership and Success, exemplifying her commitment to leadership and involvement.
Victoria was recognized at the Maine Community College System (MCCS) Student of the Year ceremony, held on Wednesday, April 23, at Maple Hill Farm in Hallowell. The event included a celebratory luncheon honoring recipients from each of Maine’s seven community colleges. Following the ceremony, honorees were invited to a tea at the Blaine House, where they were welcomed by the Governor and elected officials, further acknowledging their outstanding achievements.
CMCC is proud to celebrate Victoria for her exceptional academic achievement, leadership, and service. Her dedication and impact on both the College and her community are truly inspiring. We look forward to all she will accomplish in the future.

AUBURN, Maine – President Betsy Libby of Central Maine Community College has announced that the College will start a women’s ice hockey program beginning in the fall of 2024.
In making the announcement, President Libby said the team will begin play in the 2024-25 season, and will move forward hiring a coach during the 2023-24 academic year. The team plans to compete in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA), an organization of nearly 90 college and university affiliated women’s hockey programs across two divisions. Recently celebrating its 32nd season of existence, the ACHA provides structure, regulates operations, and promotes the quality of collegiate ice hockey.
All practices and home games will be played at the Norway Savings Bank Arena in Auburn. Marc Gosselin, Executive Director of Community Partnerships & Sports Tourism for the city of Auburn, added, “We are excited to be the home for the CM Women’s Ice Hockey program. We have experienced significant increase of interest and participation in girl’s hockey, and having a collegiate women’s hockey program skating at the arena full-time will further promote this.”
The Mustangs will most likely play an independent schedule during their inaugural campaign. Some of the teams identified as possible opponents include Bentley, UConn, Holy Cross, BC, BU, Assumption, Northeastern, and UNH.
“Our men’s hockey program has been an incredible addition to CM, attracting talented student-athletes from all over the country and internationally. Our women’s program will do the same, and share the enjoyable and competitive experience within the ACHA,” said Dr. Libby. “The Norway Savings Bank Arena is the perfect facility, less than a mile from campus,” Libby added.
Athletic Director, Dave Gonyea, noted that the top priority now is to hire a coach who can recruit quality student-athletes and build the program from the ground up. “The hockey coach will spend the first year recruiting and making sure the team will be ready to go when the 2024-25 season starts” Gonyea said.
Anyone interested in learning more about hockey at CMCC is encouraged to contact Dave Gonyea at 207-755-5251 or dgonyea@cmcc.edu.

Auburn, ME – Asma Hassan began her CM career as a senior at Lewiston High School in 2019 and was enrolled in one course through the Embark Program. After Asma’s early college experience, she enrolled as a full-time student in the fall of 2020. After a remarkable academic career, earning President’s Honors each semester, Asma will be graduating in May with an accounting degree and will be attending the University of Maine at Augusta in the Fall to complete her Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
Not only did Asma persist with her college aspirations through the Covid-19 pandemic, she is a leader in the TRIO Student Success Program and partnered with fellow students to rebuild the Muslim Student Association after returning to in-person classes.
Asma is an active member in the TRIO community at CM and has not only benefitted from TRIO support but also works in TRIO as a student employee and tutors fellow students. She did such an excellent job managing students and guests visiting TRIO that she was recruited to work in Academic Affairs as well.
Asma’s family immigrated to the US in 2010 from Djibouti Though Asma does remember Djibouti and misses the food and culture, she now refers to Lewiston as home.
Asma and six other Maine community college students were honored for their academic success and campus and community involvement at a luncheon ceremony on Wednesday, April 26, at Maple Hill Farm in Hallowell and was hosted by the Maine Community College System (MCCS) Board of Trustees. In addition to being recognized as Students of the Year, they will each receive a John and Jana Lapoint Leadership Award in the amount of $1,000. Mr. Lapoint was president of UF Strainrite in Lewiston and a trustee of the Maine Community College System. After his death in 1995, his widow, Jana Lapoint, served on the Board from 1995 to 2006 and helped establish the fund for the annual awards.
