Students at Central Maine Community College (CMCC) encountered a big change on campus this fall as the former library has been transformed into the new “Learning Commons.” In addition to library and reference support, the Learning Commons also includes four wall-mounted and two table-mounted interactive digital touch screens, top-of-the-line SMART kapp boards, the Computer Help Desk, and an open computer lab.
Judi Moreno, director of the Learning Commons, notes how the new space “brings together key campus support services that play a critical role in the academic success of students. It is a place where students can come together to collaborate, innovate, and learn in a technology-rich space.”
Also located in the Learning Commons are the Writing Center and the brand new Math/Science Center, both of which provide individual and small group tutoring. “This enables students to have access to all of their academic support resources in one place,” adds Moreno.
Student Senate President Emily Rubino of Auburn describes the Learning Commons as an “interactive learning playground” that encourages students to engage with one another. “The Learning Commons is set up for interaction. From the Help Desk to the giant touch screen displays, you can tell the College wanted to take a new approach to learning,” Rubino added.

Nicole Belanger and Sophie Martel, second-year students in the Business Administration and Management program at Central Maine Community College (CMCC) have been awarded $1,250 scholarships from the Maine Real Estate & Development Association (MEREDA) for study during the current academic year.
A resident of Lewiston, Belanger is a graduate of Vineyard Christian School. She has earned high honors while at CMCC and plans to complete her associate’s degree next May. Martel resides in Oxford and graduated from Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School. She also has earned high honors and plans to graduate in May.
Belanger and Martel are two of 14 Maine community college students to receive a scholarship from MEREDA. This is the fourth year the organization has provided the scholarship. To qualify, students must be a Maine resident, have financial need, and be enrolled as a second-year student in a building trades, architecture, construction, engineering or business program at a Maine community college.
The funds for the scholarships were raised through MEREDA’s annual “Strikes for Scholars” bowl-a-thon in May. The association’s goal is to raise enough each year to fund at least one scholarship at each of Maine’s community colleges and support Maine students as they prepare for careers in areas of study that promote MEREDA’s mission of responsible development and ownership of real estate throughout the state. This year, enough funds were raised to provide scholarships to two students at each of the seven Maine community colleges.
“MEREDA has identified workforce development as critically important to the future of real estate development. The building trades and professions provide high paying lifelong opportunities for our residents,” said Paul Peck of Drummond & Drummond, LLP and MEREDA president. “An educated workforce is vital to support economic development. MEREDA strongly supports a strong education system. In fact, over the past five years, MEREDA is proud to have raised and donated over $67,000 in scholarships assisting over 46 Maine students. We are pleased to help these deserving students achieve their goals and our members look forward to the contributions they will make to our industry.”

The 2017 CMCC recipients of the Sturdivant Island Tuna Tournament (SITT) scholarships volunteered at the Captain’s Meeting and fundraising auctions held recently for the 20th annual tourney. Rylee Moore of Livermore, a Life Sciences major, and Human Services major Rebecca L’Italien of Poland joined other volunteers at the Spring Point Marina in South Portland for the kickoff event. The SITT is a first-class giant Bluefin tuna fishing tournament that brings together highly skilled anglers from all over the Northeast. The event is a major fundraiser, as the SITT Charitable Foundation has made more than $600,000 in contributions since the inaugural event in 1998. Most of the funds have gone toward establishing and growing scholarship endowments at Maine’s community colleges, including Central Maine Community College. A record 27 Bluefin tuna were weighed in at this year’s event, and veteran Captain John Harmon and his “Banshee” were the winners with their 719-pound catch. Students in the Life Sciences Honors Program at Central Maine Community College (CMCC) recently attended the Northeast Regional Honors Council Conference in Pittsburgh, PA. With a theme of Bridging the Divide: Contemplating Differences and Forging Commonalities, the conference was further inspired by its location of Pittsburgh, commonly referred to as the “City of Bridges.”
Samuel Moreau, Fanie Wabwende, Deanna Doyon, and Emily Dingman, along with instructor Diana Drown participated in the conference, and Dingman shared a poster presentation of her capstone project title “Healthcare and Earthcare: Bridging the divide between medicine and climate change.”
Doyon described the conference as a “truly an amazing and inspiring experience. Honors is not just about doing extra credit. It is about coming together, finding a common thread, and collaborating for a common goal. The goal is to feed each other intellectually and enrich our lives.”
The Life Sciences program at CMCC provides a broad survey of scientifically accumulated knowledge focused on life and biological sciences. Students completing the degree can enter the workforce as scientific technicians or transfer into science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) majors at four-year colleges and universities. The 61-credit program, which includes 34 credits in lab science, provides appropriate course sequencing for efficient transfer and reinforces and deepens core learning across the curriculum.
In partnership with the University of New England (UNE), graduates of this program may apply all credits earned toward any of 15 bachelor’s degree programs at UNE. Some of these programs prepare students for graduate-level study in Pharmacy, Dentistry, Osteopathic Medicine, and other health professions. More information is available online at www.cmcc.edu.
