WCAP’s Early Childhood Program serves children and families in Waldo County.  We work with children ages birth to five years old.

The Assistant Teacher provides developmentally appropriate preschool education that advances the cognitive, language, physical, social and emotional growth for a classroom of up to 20 children.  You will be assisting the Lead Teacher/Site Manager in ensuring compliance with all existing state child care licensing regulations and federal Head Start standards.

Duties include but are not limited to:

Classroom Management:

1) Establishes and maintains a safe and healthy environment.

2) Plans and implements developmentally appropriate educational activities.

3) Ensures compliance with Head Start Performance Standards related to Education and Early Childhood Development and School Readiness Frameworks, program goals and statements.

4) Follows chosen curricula.

5) Provides oversight of children’s development in the classroom.


1) Must be able to pass a physical examination and TB screening. 2) Must have adequate transportation, a valid driver's license and meet WCAP's insurance requirements. 3) Must meet WCAP's background clearance requirements. 4) Valid Criminal Record History Check (CHRC) through DOE. 5) Be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have an approved medical/religious exemption on file.


1) Experience teaching, preferably with preschool-age children. 2) Proficient skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook. 3) Strong communication skills, organizational and time management skills. Education Requirements - You must meet one of the following: 1) Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood or a Bachelor's Degree in a field related to ECE or any subject with coursework equivalent to a major relating to early childhood education. College transcripts must demonstrate a minimum of 24 credit hours related to ECE specific content areas. 2) An Associate's Degree in ECE. 3) A Preschool Child Development Associate (CDA). 4) An Ed Tech II Certification from Maine DOE (required if designated as an Assistant Teacher in conjunction with a public-school pre-K partnership).
