POLICE OFFICER – Portland Police Department

Portland is currently hiring police officers to attend the August 2023 Police Academy. We are also accepting lateral officer applications on a continuing basis.  We’re looking to build a police force that best reflects the community we serve. For more information, please visit portland-police.com.

Starting annual salary for new officers is approximately $54,000.

ABOUT THE PORTLAND POLICE DEPARTMENT:

With an authorized strength of 158 sworn officers and 59 civilian staff members, the Portland Police Department is the largest municipal law enforcement agency in Maine. The department offers many paths for career advancement in both leadership opportunities and specialized training.

In addition to patrol services, specialty teams include:

  • Full service Criminal Investigations Division (one of only three agencies in Maine that investigates their own homicides)

Portland PD has a nationally recognized Behavioral Health Co-Responder Program, which recently expanded with additional positions.  The Department provides full-time law enforcement services to Peaks Island and the Portland International Jetport.

Requirements:

You must be a high school graduate or equivalent and have either two years of post-high school employment or three years of post-high school education or a combination of education and employment totaling three years. You’ll need a valid driver’s license, good driving record, and good mental and physical condition.
