Labor Grade 17:  $40,102.40 – $55,369.60

40 Hours per Week

The State of New Hampshire, Department of Transportation, Bureau of Mechanical Services, has multiple full-time vacancies for Heavy Equipment Mechanics.

SUMMARY:  To perform journeyman level diagnostic and repair work on fleet equipment to ensure its serviceability.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

~ Diagnose all fleet equipment component malfunctions utilizing computer software and computer repair manuals, determine correct procedure of repair/modification, secure correct parts, perform the repair and road test vehicles and/or equipment to verify completed repairs. Perform preventive maintenance.

~ Inspect vehicles semi-annually, performs required repairs and certifies fleet vehicles conform to NH DMV safety requirements.

~ Install, inspect and repair all variations of basic and computerized hydraulic systems of all equipment.

~ Weld/fabricate as required repairing a multitude of equipment.

~ Respond to emergency roadside repairs as assigned to provide 24-hour fleet repair service.

~ Overhaul, repair and replace various makes/models of gasoline and diesel computerized engines, automatic and manual transmissions, differentials, related engine components to minimize costly engine/component replacement.

~ Supervise and assume full responsibility for shop operations in Foreman’s absence.

~ Document inspections, maintenance and repairs to maintain vehicle/equipment life history files.

~ On occasion operate mobile lifting crane, overhead crane or gantry crane during repairs or certain operations.

Requirements:

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Shall provide own standard assortment of automotive mechanic tools through 1", 26 mm diameter and 1/2" drive, test light and basic digital multi meter. All accountabilities must be conducted in full conformance with all risk management, safety and environmental standards, regulations and administrative orders.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Associate's degree from an accredited institute of higher education in automotive mechanics, heavy equipment technology or related field. Experience: Five (5) years of experience as a mechanic in a large commercial or highway garage repairing/servicing heavy equipment including large engines and drive trains. Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one (1) year of required formal education. OR Education: High school diploma or high school equivalency credential and completion of apprenticeship training (8,000 hours) in automotive service and repair, heavy equipment technology or related field. Experience: Three (3) years of experience as a mechanic in a large commercial or highway garage repairing/servicing heavy equipment including large engines and drive trains. License/Certification: Must possess a valid driver's license. Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL-B) with air brakes OR obtain such licensure prior to completion of the one (1) year probationary period. The applicant's Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the hiring agency. Must certify to perform State of New Hampshire Motor Vehicle Inspections within 30 days of hire. Must obtain vehicle Air Conditioning certification within six (6) month of employment.
