SUMMARY:

Bridge Maintainer I: To perform semi-skilled bridge construction work, assisting other bridge maintainers in maintenance, repairs and construction associated with bridge maintenance activities.

Bridge Maintainer II: To perform semi-skilled and skilled bridge construction work, assisting other bridge maintainers in maintenance, repairs and construction associated with bridge maintenance activities.

Bridge Maintainer III: To perform skilled bridge construction and maintenance duties assisting and supervising work performed by other bridge maintainers and acts as crew supervisor in the absence of the Bridge Construction Supervisor.

Requirements:

BRIDGE MAINTAINER I: Performs masonry, carpentry, welding, wood and steel fabrication, layout structural steel, reinforcing and bridge components. Assists in work zone traffic control, environmental controls for wetlands, perform safety and security inspections, assembly and installation of temporary bridges such as Bailey Bridges, maintenance of moveable span bridges. Assists in the use of rigging slings, scaffolds and staging for safe lifting of material and equipment for repair, painting and construction purposes. Understands and applies procedures related to work zone safety, health, personnel rules, and hazardous material. Knowledge of proper use of Personal Protective Equipment. Works continuously in dangerous environment which includes: high speed traffic, night work, hazardous materials, heights, inclement weather, extreme temperatures, various river conditions, and disaster situations to ensure the safety of the traveling public. Operates heavy pneumatic tools, sometimes in restricted movement areas, working overhead, lifting and placing heavy materials. Must have the ability to climb and work from scaffolds high above the ground. Assists in the use of rigging slings, scaffolds and staging for safe lifting of material and equipment for repair, painting and construction projects. Understands and applies procedures related to work zone safety, health, personnel rules, and hazardous material. Knowledge of proper use of Personal Protective Equipment. Assists in training and supervising Bridge Maintainer I and Laborers on methods of bridge construction, maintenance and repair. Works continuously in dangerous environment which includes: high speed traffic, night work, hazardous materials, heights, inclement weather, extreme temperatures, various river conditions and disaster situations to ensure the safety of the traveling public. Operates heavy pneumatic tools sometimes in restricted movement areas, working overhead, lifting and placing heavy materials. Must have the ability to climb and work from scaffolds high above the ground. BRIDGE MAINTAINER III: Performs advanced masonry, specialized carpentry, welding, wood and steel fabrication, safety and security inspections, assists the Supervisor on reading and understanding detailed construction plans and the layout of project lines and grades, structural steel, reinforcing and bridge components. Operates and maintains heavy complex bridge construction equipment and machines to construct and maintain bridges and other facilities. Knowledge of proper use of transit, work zone traffic control, environmental controls for wetlands, assembly and installation of temporary bridges such as Bailey Bridges, operation and maintenance of moveable span bridges. Devising the use of rigging slings, scaffolds and staging for safe lifting of material and equipment for repair, painting and construction purposes. Understands and applies procedures related to work zone safety, health, personnel rules, and hazardous material. Knowledge of proper use of Personal Protective Equipment. Assists Bridge Construction Supervisor in training other Bridge Maintainers and Laborers on method of bridge construction, maintenance and repair and proper safety procedures. Works continuously in dangerous environment which includes: high speed traffic, night work, hazardous materials, heights, inclement weather, extreme temperatures, various river conditions and disaster situations to ensure the safety of the traveling public. Operates heavy pneumatic tools sometimes in restricted movement areas, working overhead, lifting and placing heavy materials. Must have the ability to climb and work from scaffolds high above the ground. Requires obtaining and exchanging information, referring inquiries to the appropriate source and responding to questions from other state employees or members of the general public.

Qualifications:

Education: Completion of two (2) years of high school or high school equivalency. Experience: Bridge Maintainer I: 1 year of experience as a laborer or helper in work concerned with maintenance, painting, building, mechanical or construction trades. Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for 1 year of required formal education. Bridge Maintainer II-III: 2-4 years of experience in bridge construction or one of the following fields: carpentry, concrete construction, structural welding, structural steel erection, structural steel painting, timber construction, or operation of heavy construction equipment. Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for 1 year of required formal education. License/Certification: Bridge Maintainer I: must possess a valid driver’s license. The applicant’s Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the hiring agency. Bridge Maintainer II: Must possess a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-B) with tanker and air brake endorsements OR obtain such licensure prior to completion of the 1 year probationary period. Bridge Maintainer III: Must possess a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL-A or CDL-B), with tank endorsement and air brakes. Candidates possessing a CDL-B license must obtain the CDL-A license prior to completion of the 1 year probationary period.
Pay Rate: $29,182.40-$50,460.80/yr
