2002-2003 Season
The Lady Mustangs finished off
their most successful season in history with a 32-1 record. For the
first time in the short history of the Mustang women, they opened up the
National Tournament with a win in convincing fashion over Taylor Fort
Wayne 77-60. They finished their tournament run with a 3-1 record
placing them 5th in the
tournament standings. Despite having a few freshmen playing key roles, the
Mustangs were led once again by key returning starters. Their heart and
leadership helped guide them to their best finish in school history. For
the 4th straight year they won the Yankee Conference
Championship and for the 5th straight season the Mustangs won
the NNESCC Championship. To round it all out they captured the first ever
Maine Small College Championship in its first year of existence. A season
paced by winning and hard work, these Lady Mustangs are going to be tough
to knock off the top of the record books!
Lynn Girouard returned for her final season in the
maroon and white. And as expected she didn’t disappoint. She brought home
her 4th consecutive USCAA All-American award and she led the
team once again in assists. She broke the school record for 3 pointers in
a game with 11 in the Yankee Conference Championship game win over NHTI.
Any time there was a big game Lynn always showed up with her top notch
level of play and she always got the best out of each one of her
teammates. She finished out an amazing career at CM and will go down as
the best player to ever step foot on the hardwood for the women.
Back for her third season Stacy Campbell was once
again a great leader. She finished 3rd on the team in steals
and 4th in rebounding. Her toughness on the court helped keep
the Mustangs on top and kept them fighting for more. For her second
straight season she led the team in block shots with her tenacity
underneath the hoop. She was a great all around player and hit some big
shots down the stretch of the season to help keep the ladies rolling in
the win column.
Lakeesha Holloman returned for the Mustangs after
taking a year off and she didn’t miss a beat. She led the country in
steals with 130 on the season and was second on the team in assists with
87. She had her best game of the season in the opening round win against
Taylor Fort Wayne. She notched 14 rebounds to go along with a game high 38
points and was the best player on the court that night. Lakeesha is a very
athletic player that always was around the ball and creating havoc for the
opposing team. On offense she could do it all from shoot outside to go
inside and post up. She is a superb athlete and an all around good
basketball player.
Ashley Swett took the frontcourt on by storm in her
freshman season putting up fabulous numbers every night she stepped onto
the court. She averaged an astonishing 18.4 ppg and 11.2 rpg to lead the
mustangs in both categories. She displays great interior post moves and
can finish with either hand at any time. Ashley looks to be a very
dominating player in the future and will be a force to reckon with.
Niki Pollock joined the team this season and played a
key role in backing up Lynn Girouard at the point guard spot. She came
along as the year progressed and played some great minutes. She will be
returning for her second season with the Mustangs and looks forward to
seeing more minutes with the loss of some key starters.
Sara Anderson of Dixfield was a member of the Lady
Mustangs. She brought along great energy and has very quick feet. Her shot
is developing and we are looking forward to seeing her back in uniform for
her second season next year.
Phary Hem joined the team this season after playing
her high school ball at Cony. She came along very well and developed some
great skills as the season progressed. Her defensive intensity and fast
breaking ability made it tough for opposing players to match up with her.
As the season prolonged her jump shot became very smooth and she began to
assert herself more into the flow of the game. She will be returning for
her second season next year.
Kristi Brooker was another key member of the Mustang
lineup. She played some key roles and can definitely shoot the ball from
the outside. She hit 23 three pointers on the season and had 49 steals.
She will have a more effective role in next year’s offense as her shooting
ability will be called upon much more.
Tammy Thibeault came into the Mustang lineup and
provided a great inside presence. She hauled down 11.1 rpg and 10.6 ppg
throughout the season. Her toughness on the block made her a force down
low with her intimidating size. She ran the floor incredibly well for a
post player and was always there to grab the rebound. Her past experience
guided her through the season and she definitely helped the Mustangs reach
the top.
