Coaches
David Gonyea
Head Coach
Coach Gonyea enters his 15th season as head coach with an impressive 309-134 record over the last fourteen seasons. Gonyea also serves as the college Athletic Director.
He was named 1996-97 New England Coach of the Year, 1998-99 and 2000-01 NSCAA Athletic Director of the Year, 2002 USCAA Athletic Director of the Year, and 1998-99,1999-00,2000-01,2001-02,2002-03, MSCC Coach of the Year and 2007-08 Yankee Conference Coach of the Year.
Under Gonyea’s leadership, the Mustangs have won eight league championships, two New England championships, and participated in 8 NSCAA/USCAA national championship tournaments. CM captured the gold in 2002 winning the prestigious USCAA national championship.
Last season he led his Mustangs to Uniontown, Pennsylvania to compete in the USCAA National Tournament. The squad finished with a 2-2 record in the tournament.
His coaching style varies from his contemporaries. His focus on running a clean program that promotes hard work on the court and in the classroom and emphasizes citizenship trumps all other attributes. CM has been known for years as a program that “does sports right”.
Patrick Blais
Assistant Coach
Coach Blais is a 1998 Graduate of Lewiston High School and a 2002 Graduate of the University of Maine at Farmington. He began his coaching career at Lewiston High School during the 2003-2004 school year.
Blais spent one year as a freshman basketball coach, one year as a junior varsity basketball coach, and three years as a varsity basketball coach at Lewiston High School. He has also spent four years as an assistant soccer coach at Lewiston High School. This will be his first year at CMCC. Coach Blais specializes in working with CM’s big men and rebounding. He will be an excellent addition to the Mustangs program.
Patrick Dempsey
Assistant Coach
Coach Dempsey returns to the bench to assist Coach Gonyea this year. Patrick enjoyed a successful playing career at CM having been named USCAA All-American three consecutive
years.
He led the team to three MSCC championships, one Yankee Conference Championship and three trips to the USCAA National Tournament. He was recognized as one of the top point guards in Maine during his playing career.
After four years on the court as the point guard, captain and immersed in the CM system, Patrick is well equipped to assist Coach Gonyea with a variety of duties. He will specialize working with the guards. During the day, Patrick is the delivery manager for Pepsi in Auburn.
Darren Winchenbach
Coach Winchenbach enters his seventh year on the sidelines. His dedication to CM is unparallel.
Darren has earned three degrees from Central Maine and is an inspiration to the team. He played on the 2001-02 team that captured the USCAA National Championship.
