In five short years, the soccer program at CM has done the impossible by going from
worst to first in the Maine Small College Conference, (MSCC). We have two consecutive state championships under our
belt and the desire and hunger for more. We have become the powerhouse of the
MSCC, very well respected in the National Small
College Conference, and we will be joining the Northern New England Conference in 1999.
The teams that couldn't wait to put CM on the roster to ensure easy wins, don't take us
for granted any longer and now carefully strategize where in the season CM will appear.
There are many reasons for the incredible turn around of this soccer program. Namely,
the direction and leadership of the athletic director, Dave Gonyea. With the goal of
making CM the best athletic program in New England, (at a two year college), he has paved
the way with enthusiasm and perseverance.
Some of the athletes that have helped in our success at CM include
Vern Ladd,
a graduate from Mt. Abram served as captain('94) and leading
scorer.
Arandu Vialus:
a Costa Rican Olympic soccer player scoring 35 goals in
two years, achieving an All American Striker ('95), and All New England Striker ('96).
Dean Boudreau: a
Mountain Valley graduate who currently holds the college
record for most goals in a career at CM, (59 goals-3 years), earning an All American
Nominee('95),as well as All New England Striker ('95, '97).
Chris Turcotte,
a Lewiston native currently holds the record for most
goals in one season with 28 goals. He accomplished an All American Striker award
('98), and All Conference Striker ('97).
Brian Lufkin,
a Dirigo graduate who currently holds the record for most
assists in a season, (13). His work earned him an All Conference award ('95 and
'97). Brian holds the honor of being the first athlete to ever be elected captain for 4
years.
Joe Cormier, an Auburn graduate who tended goal for CM, Joe holds the
All
Conference Goalie of the Year, ('98), All New England - Goalie, ('98).
There are many other great athletes who have given of themselves for the cause of
CM. Some of the greatest accomplishments in the history of soccer at CM include:
2 All Americans
5 All New England
12 All Conference Selections
2 MSCC Coach of the Year
