The Effect of Withdrawing From All of Your Classes on Your Financial Aid
When a student who is receiving federal student financial aid (grant and/or student loan funds) withdraws from all of his or her courses (officially or unofficially), the student is subject to federal student aid regulations known as Return of Title IV Funds (R2T4). Under R2T4, the student may have to return a portion of the financial aid that has been received.
The R2T4 calculation is required when a student stops attending all classes (officially or unofficially) before 60% of the semester has passed. The calculation determines how much of the student’s financial aid the student is considered to have ‘earned.’ If the student has withdrawn prior to the 60% point in the semester, the student is not considered to have ‘earned’ all of his or her financial aid and adjustments are made in accordance with federal student aid regulations.
It is important to note that any adjustments that are made to a student’s financial aid as a result of withdrawing from the College will not necessarily mirror any changes to the student’s tuition and fee charges. In some cases, students may not see a reduction in their tuition and fee charges but will still have their financial aid reduced, resulting in their owing money back to the College. Students are strongly encouraged to familiarize themselves with the College’s refund policy, which is published by the Business Office.
Any student who is receiving federal financial aid and who is considering withdrawing from the College is strongly encouraged to meet with a financial aid representative in the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid prior to withdrawing.
