Grants and Waivers
Grants, Waivers, and Sponsorships are ‘gift aid’ programs that, like scholarships, do not require repayment by the student. Grant programs are federally or state-funded, need-based, and are awarded by the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid after the student has completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Waivers are awarded by the College or by external agencies, depending on the eligibility criteria. Sponsorships are awarded by external agencies based upon the student’s individual eligibility for the program.
- Federal Pell Grants are the most common form of financial aid and are awarded based on the individual student’s financial need, as determined by the FAFSA. Students generally must be enrolled at least half-time or greater, although funding is available in limited circumstances to students who are enrolled less than half-time.
- Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG) are awarded to students who qualify for the maximum Federal Pell Grant. Only a small number of awards are made from this program each year because of the limited funding received from the Federal Government.
- State of Maine Grants are awarded to needy students from Maine who have not earned their first baccalaureate degree. Students must complete their FAFSA by May 1st and meet the eligibility criteria published each year by the Finance Authority of Maine.
- Other states may have grant programs available to residents of their states who pursue their education in Maine. Students should check with their individual states for information about these programs and eligibility criteria.
- Native American Tuition Waivers provide waivers of tuition for qualified Native Americans residing in Maine. An applicant must meet the academic qualifications for the program, apply for federal financial aid by completing a FAFSA, and provide proof of tribal eligibility to the Office of Financial Aid. Eligible applicants include (1) persons whose names appear on the current tribal census of the Passamaquoddy or Penobscot tribes, or who hold a band number of the Maliseet or Micmac tribes; and (2) persons who have resided in Maine for at least one year and have at least one parent or grandparent who was included on the census of a North American tribe. Applicants must first apply for federal student aid with the FAFSA, and the waiver is only awarded if the student does not qualify for a Federal Pell Grant that is sufficient to cover the costs of the student’s tuition.
- State of Maine Tuition Waiver programs are administered by the Finance Authority of Maine and provide free tuition to certain foster children, adopted children/wards under subsidy from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, and children of firefighters, law enforcement officers or emergency medical services persons killed in the line of duty.
- The Bureau of Maine Veterans Services administers a tuition and fee waiver program to children and spouses of qualified veterans from Maine.
