Sturdivant Tuna Tourney Adds to Endowed Fund at CMCC
September 25, 2013
Organizers of the Sturdivant Island Tuna Tournament (SITT) hosted the Maine Community College presidents at a reception in South Portland recently at which they presented checks for the colleges’ endowed SITT scholarship funds.
The 16th annual tournament was held August 1st out of the Spring Point Marina in South Portland. The tourney has made more than $500,000 in charitable contributions since the inaugural event in 1998. Most of the funds have gone toward establishing scholarship endowments at Maine’s community colleges.
This year’s tournament winner was Captain Ron Mitchell and the crew of the F/V Hazel Browne (of Portland’s Browne Trading Company and Hazel Browne Fishing Charters) who reeled in a 587 pound tuna.
